Jugal Himal Base Camp Trek: Detailed Itineraries and Planning
This blog outlines three itinerary options for the Jugal Himal Base Camp trek in Nepal, covering different durations and objectives. The Compact 5-day plan focuses on reaching Jugal Base Camp (4,700m) via Kathmandu–Chhendang–Nepemasal–Base Camp and back. The Moderate 7-day itinerary adds the sacred Panch Pokhari lakes (4,055m) before returning via Chimti to Kathmandu. The Extended 7–9 day version includes extra acclimatization/rest days for a more gradual pace. Each plan includes daily routes, elevations, timing, logistics (lodging, food, permits), and contingency notes. We compare key attributes (duration, max altitude, camping nights, difficulty, fitness level, season) in the table below. All data are drawn from recent trek operator publications and reports. Itinerary
I : 5-Day Compact (Kathmandu → Jugal BC → Kathmandu)
Day 1: Kathmandu (1,350m) to Chhendang
(2,630m) – Early 4×4 drive (7-8h) north from Kathmandu via Jalbire and
Sukute (lunch) to Thembathang (2,200m), then onward to Chhendang (also called
Chhindang). Road is rough dirt track; high-clearance jeep needed. Acclimatize
minimally by ascending 1,300m. Camp/Teahouse: Lodge in Chhendang (basic
homestay).
Distance/Time: 7-8 h driving, 100 km. Permits:
TIMS card + Langtang NP entrance (trekker zones).
Day 2: Chhendang (2,630m) to Nepemasal
(3,500m) - Trek 6-7 h through rhododendron forest uphill. Cross Balephi
Khola and climb via Tongshyup Gorge to reach Nepemasal valley. Gain 870m,
covering 12 km. Camp/Teahouse: Nepemasal has a few basic tea-houses;
water available from streams (treat before drinking).
Day 3: Nepemasal (3,500m) to Jugal
Base Camp (4,700m) Very strenuous day. Ascend first to Palmothang camp
(3,960m, 4 h), then continue 5 h to Base Camp at 4,700m. Elevation gain:
+1,200m. Technical: Final 300m climb uses fixed ropes/cables (“via
ferrata”). Require helmet, harness, lanyard (via ferrata gear). Camping:
Tent at base camp (no lodges). Carry all food; melt snow or stream-water.
Day 4: Jugal BC to Chhendang/Nepemasal
– Descend. Option A: Trek 6-7 h down to Nepemasal (3,500m), then another 4 h to
Chhendang if fitness allows. Option B (faster): Trek one push (8-9 h) down to
Chhendang (2,630m). Use trails via Gyap Kharka or river route. Camp/Teahouse:
Tea house in Nepemasal/Chhendang if arriving early. If behind schedule, camp at
Nepemasal.
Day 5: Chhendang (2,630m) to Kathmandu
- Trek/hike down 3-4 h to roadhead (Nesam Khola junction). Then drive ~6 h back
to Kathmandu.
Logistics: Lodging is basic: mixed
tea-houses (Chhendang, Nepemasal) and camping above 3,960m. Meals at tea-houses
until Nepemasal; carry freeze-dried or cook own above. All water above
Nepemasal must be treated. Guides/porters recommended. Altitude sickness risk
is high (go slow, hydrate). Emergency: Nearest doctor in Chautara (8/9h drive);
Kathmandu/Dhulikhael hospitals for serious cases.
Itinerary
II: 7-Day with Panch Pokhari Extension
Moderate
Itinerary (Kathmandu–Panch Pokhari–Kathmandu)
Day 1: Kathmandu → Chhendang (drive)
Day 2: Chhendang → Nepemasal (trek)
Day 3: Nepemasal → Jugal Base Camp (trek
via ferrata)
Day 4: Jugal Base Camp → Chhendang (trek
down)
Day 5: Chhendang → Panch Pokhari (trek)
Day 6: Panch Pokhari → Chimti (trek)
Day 7: Chimti → Kathmandu (drive)
Day 1: Same as Compact Day 1 (drive
KTM→Chhendang).
Day 2: Chhendang to Nepemasal –
Trek 6–7 h to Nepemasal (3,500m) (as above).
Day 3: Nepemasal to Jugal BC –
Trek 9–10 h via Palmothang (3,960m) to Base Camp (4,700m)[8] (same as Day 3 above).
Day 4: Jugal BC to Chhendang –
Descend ~8 h to Chhendang (camp or lodge). (One could camp at Palmothang if
tired.)
Day 5: Chhendang (2,630m) to Panch
Pokhari (4,055m) – Depart early. Hike 6 h ascending 1,425m via Kinche or an
established shepherds’ trail. (A stop at Dipu (2,240m) en route is traditional,
then climb via Laurebina La (4,074m) to the five lakes.) Camping: Set
camp by Panch Pokhari lakes (sacred site). Note: This section has stone
steps; care in wet weather.
Day 6: Panch Pokhari to Chimti
(1,900m) – Trek down 6-7 h. Early morning explore the lake viewpoint, then
descend via new trail: up briefly to 4,229m viewpoint then down through
rhododendron forest to Nema-Gchukpa Kharka (3,580m), then continue steeply to
Chimti (near 1,900m) by late day. Chimti Village has rustic lodges and
road access.
Day 7: Chimti to Kathmandu - Drive
6 h to Kathmandu via Melamchi Bazaar (S07 National Highway). End tour.
Extra Logistics: This route includes high altar
camps (Panch Pokhari). Kathmandu - Chhendang road; Chimti has vehicle access to
KTM. Camping at Panch Pokhari (no lodges). Permits/tims as above. Physical
demands are extreme (total elevation gain 2,850m). Best for fit trekkers
accustomed to altitude. Contingency: if weather forces, skip Panch Pokhari and
descend via Chimti directly from Chhendang (lose Panch Pokhari).
Itinerary
III: 7–9 Day Flexible (Acclimatization Emphasis)
For less-experienced
trekkers, add 1–2 rest/acclimatization days:
Day 1: Kathmandu → Chhendang (drive).
Day 2: Chhendang → Nepemasal (trek).
Day 3: Rest/Acclimatization at
Nepemasal -short hikes (e.g., to View Point or nearby knoll) to aid
acclimatization.
Day 4: Nepemasal → Jugal BC (via
Palmothang) 9-10 h (camp at BC).
Day 5: Rest at Base Camp - Optional
acclimatization hike around icefall.
Day 6: Jugal BC → Nepemasal - descend 6–7 h
(stay at Nepemasal).
Day 7: Nepemasal → Panch Pokhari – trek 6–7 h
(camp).
Day 8: Panch Pokhari → Chimti – trek 6–7 h
(stay at Chimti).
Day 9: Chimti → Kathmandu – drive out.
This slower itinerary (8-9 days) allows two rest days (Nepemasal and Base Camp) and easier daily mileage. It is suitable for groups concerned about altitude or weather delays. All other logistics and notes as above (lodging, meals, permits).

Logistics & Gear
·
Transport: Jeeps from KTM to Chhendang via Sukute (approx. 6–7h); return from
Chimti/Kyangsing via Melamchi road. Road conditions: unpaved, landslides common
in monsoon; 4WD required.
·
Lodging: Chhendang and Chisapani have basic tea-houses; Nepemasal has a few
simple lodges. Above 3,900m, use tents. Camping equipment must be carried or
rented (blanket for -10°C).
·
Food/Water: Tea-houses serve basic Nepali meals. Above Nepemasal carry
dehydrated/lunch packs; melt snow or filter stream water.
·
Permits: Foreign trekkers need a TIMS card and Langtang National Park permit.
No special local permits reported. Group trekking license suggests hiring a
registered guide (advised).
·
Guides/Porters: Mandatory, but advised for navigation and via-ferrata sections. A
guide should be experienced with fixed ropes. Porter recommended (1 per 2
trekkers) to carry camp gear.
·
Technical Sections: Final ascent to Base Camp has fixed ropes/cables (via ferrata-style).
Required gear: helmet, harness, via-ferrata lanyard, gloves. Rentals are scarce
locally; plan to bring or arrange through outfitter. Guides typically supply
this gear.
·
Seasonality: Best in Spring (Apr–May) or Autumn (Sep–Nov). Winter is
very cold; monsoon brings rain/landslides and leeches.
·
Altitude Acclimatization: The extended itinerary adds rest days at Nepemasal and Base Camp to
reduce altitude illness risk. Always “climb high, sleep low” strategy.
·
Emergency: First aid kits mandatory. Nearest doctor 10-12h away at Chautara
(Sindhupalchowk District Hospital); helicopter evacuation to Kathmandu for
severe cases. Carry altitude sickness medication and a satellite phone or GPS
tracker if available.
·
Contingencies: If weather/illness prevents reaching Base Camp, consider turning back
at Gyap Kharka or Palmothang. If vehicle breaks down, the group can camp at
nearest tea-house or walk out to roadhead (trail to Kyangsing).
